Christian Wellness and Life Coaching vs. Counseling: What’s the Difference?

When you are looking for support, it can be difficult to know whether counseling or Christian wellness and life coaching is the right fit. Both can provide encouragement, guidance, and a safe place to talk, but they serve different purposes. Understanding those differences can help you choose the service that best meets your needs.

What Does a Licensed Mental Health Counselor Do?

A Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) is a trained and licensed mental health professional. LMHCs complete graduate-level education, supervised clinical experience, and licensing requirements. They are qualified to assess, diagnose, and treat mental health conditions using clinical counseling and psychotherapy techniques.

At New Directions Counseling Center, our Licensed Mental Health Counselors are Carrie Cook, Kimberly Favaro, Kristin Schwartz, and Nicole Petry. Each counselor has her own areas of experience and provides care tailored to the individual needs of her clients.

An LMHC may help with concerns such as anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, stress, low self-esteem, anger, life transitions, and relationship or family difficulties. Treatment is personalized to the client’s symptoms, experiences, and goals.

What Does a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist Do?

A Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) is also a trained and licensed mental health professional. Like an LMHC, an LMFT completes graduate education, supervised clinical experience, and state licensing requirements. LMFTs can assess and treat mental health concerns, but their education places additional emphasis on relationships and the ways couples and families affect one another.

Our Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists at New Directions Counseling Center are Blake Lawhorn and Alina Ghitea. They work with clients experiencing individual, relationship, marriage, and family concerns based on their training and areas of experience.

LMFTs often work with individuals as well as couples and families. They may help with marriage difficulties, communication problems, family conflict, parenting concerns, separation, divorce, grief, anxiety, depression, and other life challenges.

LMHCs and LMFTs are not exactly the same, but their work often overlaps. Both provide clinical mental health treatment, and both may work with individuals, couples, and families depending on their training and areas of experience.

What Does a Certified Christian Wellness and Life Coach Do?

A Certified Christian Wellness and Life Coach provides nonclinical, faith-based support. At New Directions Counseling Center, Izella Walls helps clients move forward by offering encouragement, practical guidance, and a Christian perspective.

Christian wellness and life coaching may focus on:

● Personal and spiritual growth

● Establishing healthy habits and boundaries

● Setting meaningful goals

● Finding direction and purpose

● Navigating life transitions

● Strengthening relationships and communication

● Building confidence and accountability

● Creating a healthier balance in everyday life

When desired by the client, coaching may include Christian principles, Scripture, prayer, and faith-centered encouragement.

How Is Coaching Different From Counseling?

The primary difference is that counseling is clinical mental health treatment, while coaching focuses on personal growth, present-day goals, and moving forward. A Christian wellness and life coach does not diagnose mental health conditions or provide psychotherapy. Coaching is not a replacement for treatment from a licensed mental health professional.

Someone experiencing significant anxiety, depression, trauma symptoms, thoughts of self-harm, or another mental health concern should seek help from a licensed mental health professional. A coach should refer a client to an appropriate licensed provider when the client’s needs are outside the scope of coaching.

Which Service Is Right for Me?

Counseling may be the better choice if you are experiencing emotional distress, symptoms affecting your daily life, unresolved trauma, or a possible mental health condition. Christian wellness and life coaching may be a good fit if you are seeking faith-based encouragement, accountability, clearer goals, healthier habits, or support with personal and spiritual growth.
